While Minnesota is dealing with a blizzard this weekend, the Loons escaped from the snowy white scene to Vancouver, BC for a Sunday afternoon showdown at BC Place. The Vancouver Whitecaps have had a magnificent start to their 2026 season and have only lost one competitive match this season. So we reached out to our friends over at The Third Sub to get you some insight on the 'Caps.

Ashle Paige: Vancouver fell in the MLS Cup Final last season. How hard was that on the fans, and how is the team rebounding from that defeat?

Sam Rowan: It was a tough one for sure, but I think people in the city were also really excited about everything the team accomplished last year, especially making it to the final and bringing in a big name like Thomas Müller. Unlike the Champions Cup Final in the summer, Vancouver was right there in the MLS Cup Final, and if not for an Emmanuel Sabbi double post, it could have gone the other way. The big takeaway is that expectations for 2026 are really high. This year, it’s silverware or bust.

AP: The 'Caps didn’t make a ton of moves over the off-season, bringing in just a few players. How much does that speak to the cohesiveness and strength of the Whitecaps roster?

SR: A lot of Vancouver’s rise last year came from players developing within the team. Tristan Blackmon, Sebastian Berhalter, Ali Ahmed, and Pedro Vite all took huge steps, and that played a big part in their success. Losing Vite and Ahmed is noticeable, but it also opens up opportunities for some younger players. Sørensen has shown he’s willing to trust the young guys if they work hard, so we’ll probably see more of that this season. At the same time, the spine of the team is still there, especially in midfield with Berhalter and Cubas, who remain one of the best duos in the league.

AP: VWFC suffered a 3–0 loss to Seattle midweek in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Do you think the midweek match will have an impact on the Whitecaps’ fitness, or after suffering the loss, will they go out on Sunday with something to prove?

SR: One of the big talking points after that loss was just how much Vancouver rotated their squad, and maybe that didn’t help. On the bright side, it means a few key players will be fresh for Sunday. Andrés Cubas was suspended for the Seattle match, so having him back is a big boost. I’d also watch out for former Loon AZ Jackson on the wing and young Canadian Jeevan Badwal, who could start in an attacking midfield role.

AP: Of course, there is the stadium situation going on in Vancouver right now, and no one wants the Whitecaps to leave. Is there any positive movement on resolving that? And how do the fans feel about BC Place?

SR: It’s not a great time politically to be asking for a ton of public money to build a stadium. Even if a project did get approved, realistically it would take five to eight years. BC Place itself is a great stadium, but the issue is how it’s run. The Whitecaps are more like a customer than a partner, which limits what they can do on matchdays and how they generate revenue. There have been some small steps to improve the relationship, but a new stadium plan really needs to be in place within the next year or this could become a much bigger problem.

AP: Score prediction for VAN v MIN?

SR: Vancouver will be looking to bounce back after the midweek result, and they’ve usually done well in those situations under Sørensen. I think it’ll be a tight game because that’s Minnesota’s style, but I’m backing the home side for a 2-1 win.
