Minnesota crushed by an avalanche of goals

The 6–0 defeat handed to the Loons is now officially the worst loss in club history.

Minnesota United came into Vancouver looking for a marquee win near the start of the season. Sadly that was not to be as they instead were handed a 6–0 defeat by the defending Western Conference champions.

Coming off a rough loss in Nashville, manager Cameron Knowles kept the lineup intact with a few exceptions. Kyle Duncan jumped in at right back for Hlongwane, giving Duncan his first ever start for MNUFC. Carlos Harvey also came in on the back line, with Anthony Markanich being available from the bench. James Rodríguez was also available from the bench, following missing the match in Nashville.

Early on Vancouver made it known who's house Minnesota was in. Kyle Duncan came in hard while going after the ball, resulting in a foul inside the box and a kick from the spot. Sebastian Berhalter easily converted the spot kick to give Vancouver their first goal of the day.

From that point on Vancouver dominated the game up and down the pitch. Brian White scored just five minutes later to double the Whitecaps lead. Then in the 22nd minute Berhalter delivered a free kick from the left side of the box, in the scrum of players Mathias Laborda was able to tap it in and bring the lead to 3–0. Emmanuel Sabbi sent the teams to the locker room with the game at 4–0 following his 43rd minute goal.

The second half started out exactly as the first half did. Nine minutes into the half Aziel Jackson was fouled just barely inside the box, after being sandwiched by Wil Trapp and DJ Taylor. The 'Caps sent Brian White to the spot where he easily converted to make it a 5–0 match with 40 minutes to play.

James Rodríguez made his debut for Minnesota United, coming on in the 64th minute replacing Tomás Chancalay in the midfield. Unfortunately that debut would not go as many hoped, with the Loons ending the night without a goal. Cheikh Sabaly added a sixth goal for the Whitecaps in the 74th minute.

The loss for Minnesota now takes the record for the club's worst ever loss, in either Major League Soccer or in the NASL. MNUFC returns home next week for another match with a tough opponent as they host Seattle Sounders next Sunday afternoon.
