Loons on Loan: Players in the Championship start their season

The USL Championship started their season last weekend, which means the season has officially started for all the Loons on Loan

Last weekend the USL Championship kicked off its 2026 campaign, albeit under strife. As of the publication of this story the USLPA still does not have a new CBA with the United Soccer League organisation. The USLPA has stated they will authorise a strike, but they have not declared a formal strike at this time. Which does mean, at least for the time being, the five Loons in the USL Championship will continue their season as normal.

But there are also three MNUFC players on loan outside the United States, with two playing in Europe and one in Korea. Here's how all of the Loons on Loan did over their last week of play.

Worldwide Loons

Wessel Speel (Shelbourne FC, League of Ireland): The Reds had a tight week with two matches in the League of Ireland in just a few days. The weekend opened with Shelbourne falling 2–3 to St. Patrick's on Friday 6 March. That was followed by a 2–2 draw with Shamrock Rovers just days later on Monday. Speel, who's been the primary goalkeeper for Shelbourne since joining the club on loan, had four saves v St. Patrick's and another two against Shamrock Rovers. After four matches they have a 1–3–1 (W-D-L) record (6 points). The Reds next match is tomorrow, 13 March at 2:35pm CT away to Derry City, which sits in Northern Ireland. All League of Ireland and FAI Cup matches can be watched on their streaming service, LOI TV.
