Loons drop points on the road in New England

MNUFC was unable to overcome a slow paced Revs offence to gain points away from home.

Two penalty kicks goals, one for each side in the first half, followed up by an early second half New England goal was enough for the hosts to put themselves over Minnesota. The loss is Minnesota United's second straight loss on the season as the league prepares for break.

Coming in off two days of rest Camern Knowles made a few subs to the starting eleven, one that was kept mostly the same. The biggest changes were the loss of James who is off to join the Colombian national team before the World Cup and Jefferson Díaz who is out due to suspension.

The New England evening started in the exact way MNUFC didn't want. A soft foul right inside the box by Michael Boxall resulted in New England being awarded a penalty five minutes in. Carles Gil stepped up to take the kick and easily put it past goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Less than 20 minutes later Anthony Markanich was fouled inside the box, handing Minnesota United a penalty. Kelvin Yeboah stepped up to the line and scored from the spot, making up for two missed penalties on Wednesday.

The draw lasted through the remainder of the opening half, but New England was able to break that just minutes into the second half. Luca Langoni broke into the 18 yard box and scored unguarded to put the hosts up.

New England was able to use that momentum to dominate the second half of play. The Revs slowed down play almost to a crawl at times and held the Loons to only a pair of shots in the second half. Three substitutions for MNUFC did not give the Loons the offensive spark they were looking for in the second half.

After having multiple chances to score in the first half, none of that came that way in the second half. Minnesota was unable to take advantage of their set piece opportunities to get a decent chance at goal. That all added into the Revs defeating the Loons 2–1 in Minnesota's final away match before the break. Next up for the Loons is one final home match of the first half of the season as they host Real Salt Lake.
