With the transfer window coming to a close in a little over a week supporters have been getting antsy to see the club pull in some players. Prior to today the Loons had only brought in one player, midfielder AZ Jackson on loan with an option to buy. But MNUFC has now signed a forward, announcing the club acquired Maurice Malone from Austrian side SK Sturm Graz.
Malone, a German with dual US Citizenship, will not occupy an international roster spot for the Loons. Minnesota signed the 26 year old on a guaranteed contract through 2029/30 with a club option for the 2030/31 season.
Maurice Malone has spent three of the previous four seasons playing with Austrian Bundesliga sides, each season with a separate club. 2022/23 he spent on loan with Wolfsberger AC making 29 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals and garnering 11 assists. After playing sparingly in Switzerland the following season he moved back to Austria for the 2024/25 season, signing with FK Austria Wein earning 48 appearances across all competitions and scoring 16 goals and tagging 7 assists that also saw him play in the Conference League qualifying.
After one season in the Austrian capital Malone made the move to SK Sturm Graz for the 2025/26 season. Last season Sturm Graz also played Europa League football, where Malone made eight of his 39 appearances for the club. Compared to the previous two seasons in Austria, 2025/26 was disappointing as he netted just four goals and three assists in Die Schwoazn 5th place campaign.
If the 26 year old German can get his production back to 2024/25 numbers Malone could be a massive gain for a Minnesota United side that has struggled to score for much of the season. He will officially join the club following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.
