Die Frauen Report: Champions and Relegation Fights

The Frauen-Bundesliga is coming to a close and the Champion has been crowned, but the relegation fight is not over.

Welcome back. Last week, the Frauen-Bundesliga crowned their Deutscher Meister. With their 3-2 win over Union Berlin, Bayern Munich claimed their fourth consecutive title and seventh overall. FCB have been on an impressive run going undefeated in league play through 22 matches, conceding eight goals, while scoring 84. Despite the title being secured, there is still a lot of action and much to be played for. Let's take a look.

Last Week's Matches

Wednesday, 22 April 2026

  • Union Berlin 2 - 3 Bayern Munich

The first match up between Union Berlin and Bayern Munich followed a similar script to many of this season's Frauen-Bundesliga matches. FCB dominated, routing Union Berlin 4-0. The followup fixture followed a much different, much wilder path. Bayern grabbed an early lead 8 minutes into the match, when a Union Berlin attempt to clear a corner made it only as far as Bernadette Amani at the top of the box. Amani found Edna Imade in traffic with a misdirected shot/pass and she put the ball past Union goalkeeper Cara Bösl. FCB's lead was short lived. Just three minutes later, Sophie Weidauer picked off a Bayern back pass deep in her own defensive half, sprinted down field, and beat goalkeeper Ana Mahmutovic one on one to even the match for Union Berlin.

The match remained even until the second half when Barbara Dunst unleashed a shot from well outside the 18 yard box which beat a diving Bösl. Union Berlin evened the match 27 minutes later when a bit of nice combination play gave Lia Kamber a clean look at goal. She did not miss. Any thought Union Berlin might delay Bayern Munich's coronation was cast aside in the 84th minute when Guila Gwinn volleyed a Klara Bühl cross into the net. Bühl's goal sealed Bayern's fourth consecutive title.

  • Werder Bremen 0 - 0 Wolfsburg

Though Bayern's victory ultimately made the issue moot, Wolfsburg needed to avoid a loss to keep from gifting FCB the title in the event of the latter stumbled in their match against Union Berlin. Wolfsburg dominated possession 65%/35%, but was ultimately wasteful with that possession, managing just three shots on goal. Bremen didn't fair much better, only managing five shots on goal during the match. Both teams finished with 10 players on the pitch. Sarah Gutmann received a straight red card for Bremen, when she threw down Kessya Bussy in the 86th minute. Wolfsburg was not able to capitalize on the extra player and break the deadlock, as just two minutes later, Janou Levels saw red for a foul on Maja Sternad.

  • Nürnberg 0 - 1 Hamburg

Looking to stay ahead of SGS Essen and Carl Zeiss Jena and out of the relegation zone, Hamburg squared off against the team directly above them in the table, Nürnberg. Hamburg dominated possession and out shot Nürnberg 14 to 7. Ultimately, Annaleen Böhler's headed goal off of a corner kick proved to be the difference.

  • SGS Essen 4 - 3 Carl Zeiss Jena

The relegation derby was our match to watch last week, and the fixture lived up to the billing. With a vital three points the line, Ella Touon gave Essen the lead in the 6th minute. Jacqueline Meißner doubled Essen's lead just two minutes later. Rieke Tietz pulled a goal back for Carl Zeiss Jena before the half. After the break, Meißner and Touon scored for Essen two minutes apart for the second time in the match. Melina Reuter and Helen Börner scored second half goals to bring Carl Zeiss Jena with in a goal. They were unable to find that goal and the match finished 4-3.

  • RB Leipzig 1-1 Werder Bremen

Leipzig took an early lead at home when in the 13 minute Bremen goalkeeper Mariella El Sherif couldn't hang on to Lisa Baum shot. The rebound fell to Delice Boboy who put it in the net. Leipzig held the lead into the second half, when Emilia Ásgeirsdottir fouled Mara Alber in the box. Larissa Mühlhaus made the most of her opportunity from the spot, sending Leipzig goalkeeper Elvira Herzog the wrong way on the equalizer.

  • Eintracht Frankfurt 3 - 1 Wolfsburg

Looking to maintain the four point gap to fourth place Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt had the unenviable task of hosting the second place She-Wolves. A nice give and go combination play between Nicole Anyomi and Nadine Riesen put Frankfurt ahead in the 27th minute. The home team didn't look back from that point. Erëleta Memeti picked off a poor Camilla Küver clearance attempt and deposited it in the net to double Frankfurt's lead just before halftime.

After, the break, Frankfurt added a third goal on an opportunity Wolfsburg goalkeeper Martina Tufekovic will want back. Tufekovic, who was making her debut in this match, went to ground on a Riesen shot from outside the box. Just when it looked like she had the ball corralled, it slipped through her arms, got behind her and into the the net. Late in the match, Wolfsburg earned a penalty off of a Hayley Rasso handball in the box, which Janina Minge converted.

  • Bayer Leverkusen 4 -1 vs Freiburg

Bayer Leverkusen pounced on Freiburg shortly after the whistle and had a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the match behind goals from Katharina Piljic and Estrella Gonzalez. By half time, the lead was up to 3-0, thanks to a penalty taken by Cornelia Kramer. Carlotta Wamser added a fourth goal for Leverkusen in the second half. Alena Bienz scored shortly before time expired to keep Freiburg from being shutout.

  • Hoffenheim 6 - 2 Köln

Needing a win to prevent third place Frankfurt from pulling away, Hoffenheim demolished Köln. Hoffenheim lead 2-1 inside of ten minutes, and 4-1 at the half. Selina Cerci had a hat trick and Marie Steiner , Nikée van Dijk, and Janna Grimm each had a goal for Hoffenheim.

The Race for Europe

After this past week, the first of three Frauen-Bundesliga spots in the next Champions League competition is secure. Bayern Munich's title ensures FCB will take part in the tournament. Who will join them as the league's other direct qualifier remains to be seen. Frankfurt's win over Wolfsburg cuts the deficit between the two teams to four points with just three matches remaining.

Wins this past weekend by Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen allowed them to keep pace with Frankfurt, who hold the one qualifier spot for the Frauen-Bundesliga. Third place and fifth place are separated by just five points.

The Struggle to Avoid Relegation

The relegation fight remains tight. Despite their victory, Hamburg was not able to add distance between themselves and the drop. Hamburg currently sits just three points ahead of Essen. Carl Zeiss Jena's defeat at the hands of Essen pushed them further from safety. They are now 4 points back of Essen and 7 from Hamburg and safety.

One Match To Watch and Why

This week's match to watch once again comes from the relegation end of the table. Hamburg has an opportunity to create additional distance between themselves and the relegation zone. They face Union Berlin, who are 9th in the table currently. Carl Zeiss Jenna and Essen face more difficult match ups in the 7th and 5th place teams. A result against Berlin would all but assure safety for Hamburg.

Viel Vergnügen beim Anschauen!
