Due to the April DFB-Pokal semifinals and the international break, Frauen-Bundesliga sides have not taken the field in league play in approaching a month. The April break was the last of the season and beginning Wednesday, the teams return to the pitch for the race to the finish. Who claims a Champions League spot and who will be relegated remains undetermined. After the break, let’s take a look at where things stand.
The Race for Europe
As the Frauen-Bundesliga returns from the final international break, the league title all but officially belongs to Bayern Munich. Bayern can make it official as soon as Wednesday, as both FCB and second-place Wolfsburg are in action. Bayern can clinch the title and lock in a Champions League spot for next season with a win or a She-Wolves defeat. If FCB fail to clinch on Wednesday, the title could become theirs on Sunday, while they’re idle, when Wolfsburg play their second match in four days.
Wolfsburg sit in second place, six points ahead of the next closest team, Eintracht Frankfurt, but with a game in hand. Wolfsburg can not clinch the second table spot and the last direct Frauen-Bundesliga Champions League qualification spot for next season just yet, but they will play two matches during the half week which could go a long way to helping them to that goal. A win in Sunday’s match against Frankfurt, in particular, could create some additional separation in the standings for the She-Wolves.
Eintracht Frankfurt occupy the league’s lone Champions League qualification spot, but are only four points ahead of Hoffenheim and five ahead of Bayer Leverkusen with four fixtures remaining. This weekend’s match will be a significant factor in determining if Frankfurt can hold on to the third spot. Frankfurt will play their most difficult remaining opponent second-place Wolfsburg on Sunday. A result could help secure a Champions League qualification spot. Also looming in the background, seven points back, but with two games in hand is Werder Bremen. Despite the two extra games, Bremen may not be able to launch back into the race for Europe as the rescheduled matches are against the table’s top two teams.
The Struggle to Avoid Relegation
The relegation fight is tight, with three teams separated by four points with four matches remaining. Last place Carl Zeiss Jena managed a draw against RB Leipzig in their last match before the break to get within one point of 13th place SGS Essen. Hamburg sit three points clear of the drop, in 12th, going into this weekend. Carl Zeiss Jena and Essen will square off in Stadion an der Hafenstraße, in what could be a make or break moment for either team’s campaign to remain in the top flight. Hamburg have an opportunity to maintain or extend the gap between them and the relegation zone this weekend. Their opponent, Nürnberg, are directly above them in the standings.

One Match To Watch and Why
Wolfsburg and Frankfurt offers possibly the most exciting match this weekend, but with the season racing towards its conclusion and both teams facing the drop, Essen vs Carl Zeiss Jena offers the most consequential game. As mentioned above, this match could make or break both team’s hopes of staying up. For Carl Zeiss Jenna, a win would allow them to leapfrog Essen and depending on the results in Nürnberg, cut the gap to Hamburg and potential safety. Conversely, an Essen victory could put them on equal footing with Hamburg going into the last three matches.
