Just one day after Eric Ramsay’s departure from Minnesota, former MNUFC2 head coach Cameron Knowles has been named as Minnesota United’s newest manager. Knowles is the third permanent MLS manager of the Loons and the fifth overall in Minnesota United’s 16 year history. The former MLS player Knowles led MNUFC to a 2–0–1 (W–L–D) record during his time as interim head coach ahead of Eric Ramsay’s arrival in 2024. Overall as a manager the New Zealand native has total manigerial record of 60-67-13 (W-L-D) in all competitions.
“Cameron is the right leader for this moment in our club’s journey,” said Minnesota United Sporting Director, Khaled El-Ahmad. “He has grown with this organization, understands our players, our culture, and our standards, and has consistently demonstrated the ability to develop people, build strong teams, and compete at a high level. We believe in Cameron, we believe in this squad, and we are excited about the future we are building together.”
“I would like to thank Dr. McGuire, Shari Ballard and Khaled El-Ahmad for the incredible opportunity to lead this team. Minnesota United is a fantastic organization with a strong group of players and a loyal following. I hope to build on the success the club has achieved over the years,” said Manager Cameron Knowles.
Knowles has managed on every professional level of the pyramid, coaching Timbers2 in the second division USL Championship, MNUFC2 in the third division MLS Next Pro, and in the top flight MLS with MNUFC. He is also the first assistant to be appointed MNUFC manager since Carl Craig was ahead of the 2016 NASL season. In 2016 the Loons missed the NASL playoffs by one position and six points. Adrian Heath took over for Carl Craig following the season and heading into Minnesota’s first MLS season in 2017.
The appointment comes following rumours last week that ended yesterday when it was officially announced that Eric Ramsay would be leaving Minnesota United for West Brom of the English second division. Ramsay’s first match in charge of The Albion is on Friday against Middlesbrough. Cameron Knowles first match in charge comes on 7 February against Sporting Kansas City as part of the Coachella Valley Invitational. The Loons open the MLS regular season on 21 February away from home against Austin FC.
