Liverpool are based in an area of their conurbation which is traditionally apart, the peninsula of The Wirral. Birkenhead is just across the River Mersey from their home city (a short, and famous, ferry ride) but the peninsula has its own flavor. Following a spectacular failure of investment by the club, the back to back league champions in 2013–15 fell into the Championship, which they won last season to return to the top flight.
Manchester City play next door to the club’s main stadium, at the City Academy Stadium, in the eastern part of the city of Manchester. They have won the WSL once, the FA Cup 3 times and the Conti Cup 4 times. They also notably won a WSL license at the expense of Doncaster Belles.
Manchester United, in contrast to their inter-city rivals, play away from their Old Trafford home. They instead play close to the Leeds to Liverpool Canal in Leigh, 10 miles away. With their vocal supporters, they are close to being the primary tenant in what is otherwise a stadium with a decidedly lower league feel. Also unlike City, the Red Devils had to win their way up from the Championship — which they achieved in 2019.
Reading in the Thames Valley just outside London play their matches at the club’s main stadium, the Select Car Leasing Stadium. The Royals are a rare example of a WSL club whose men’s side is in the Championship.
Tottenham Hotspur play at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road stadium, in the shadows of the Olympic Park, and ironically further away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than it is from the men’s stadium of West Ham.
West Ham play their match at Chigwell Construction Stadium, in the Eastern-most borough of London, in an area more closely allied to their club than the men’s stadium in Stratford.
