USL2 Monthly Update: June (and early July)

The Division is decided, the season is almost over, and the playoffs are coming up.

The 2026 USL League Two season is coming to a close with the final round of regular season football taking place this week. Most clubs only have a single match left to play, but there are a few who have two. With the division title already decided and only two teams fighting for that second playoff spot, the other six teams are winding down their campaign.

1st Place - Minneapolis City SC (11-0-0, 33 points)

For both the men and women the Heartland Division titles are held by Twin Cities clubs. Minnesota Aurora uslwon the women's division title for the fifth straight time and Minneapolis City SC has now gone back to back as USL2 Heartland Champs. Scoring over forty goals and allowing less than ten the Crows have dominated the Heartland this season with only RKC's hard nosed defence and Sueño FC providing the Crows a real challenge. City will head to the USL League Two playoffs that are set to start on 17 July at a to be determined location.

2nd Place - Sueño FC (7-1-3, 22 points)

Sueño is looking at second place for a second straight season and while not a division title, would put them into the playoffs. The three losses for Sueño have hurt their season and had one of those gone the other way the Illinois club may already be in the playoffs. With only one match left to play all they need is a win over Chicago Dutch Lions this weekend to secure playoff spot.

3rd Place - Chicago Dutch Lions (6-1-3, 19 points)

In a shocking twist Chicago Dutch Lions are fighting for a playoff spot, something we have not seen from CDL before. Heavily focused on Chicago-area players the Dutch Lions are having one of their best seasons. But like Sueño the three losses suffered have hurt their chances. With two matches this week the Dutch Lions have to get four points, including a win over Sueño in order to secure a spot in the playoffs.

4th Place - River Light FC (4-3-3, 15 points)

After finishing fifth in 2025 with 15 points, River Light have had a much better 2026 season with 15 points through only ten matches. While they are eliminated from the playoff race, with two matches to play they could finish with 21 points. If River Light is able to do that, they could finish as high as third, but will without question have a better season than last.

5th Place - Rockford Raptors (5-0-5, 15 points)

Coming back to high level men's soccer for the first time in 25 years, the Raptors have had a respectable first USL2 campaign. 17 goals scored, nearly 2 per match on average and allowing 22 Rockford has a good base to build on. That is of course if they retain some players for the 2027, which is always a challenge at this level of the game.

6th Place - St. Croix Legends (4-0-6, 12 points)

To sum up their season in a few words, the Legends have been on struggle bus. A horrifying 1-0-4 start to the season put St. Croix out of the playoff race almost immediately. But since then the Legends have rebounded with three wins and two losses in their last five matches, including a 7-1 drubbing of Chicago based Edgewater Castle. The Legends don't have the ability to play spoiler, but could be the deciding factor in which club takes the wooden spoon.

7th Place - RKC Third Coast (3-1-6, 10 points)

RKC Third Coast has been a team full of inconsistencies in 2026. The Gulls startedthe season with tough to crack defence, similar to their women's side. However in the last few matches that defence has cracked, with RKC allowing 10 goals in the last three matches. The recent defensive issues have only been exasperated by their struggles scoring. Only twice during the season has RKC scored more than one goal and since their 4-0 win over Edgewater Castle, the Gulls have lost four on the bounce.

8th Place - Edgewater Castle (2-0-9, 6 points)

Coming up from the Midwest Premier League the Rooks had a huge task ahead of them, but the season has been even tougher than expected. After winning two of their first five matches, Edgewater has lost six on the bounce leading to a brutal finish to the campaign. ECFC closes the season with a home match against Minneapolis City SC and could end up with the wooden spoon. But last place will ultimately be dictated by Rochester 's match on Wednesday. Should RFC lose on Wednesday night, ECFC will avoid wooden spoon, regardless of Sunday's results.

9th Place - Rochester FC (2-0-9, 6 points)

Rochester sits in last place and have been the whipping boy of the Heartland Division in 2026. Allowing forty goals on the season, the Loons are marching towards a "trophy" they'd rather not get. Their last win came nearly a month ago, when they defeated RKC Third Coast. Rochester closes their season on Wednesday night with a home match against St. Croix Legends. In order to avoid the wooden spoon Rochester needs to win or draw on Wednesday night and have Edgewater Castle lose over the weekend.
