PPL Everyday: Feat. Batiuk and Karoyo

Ava Batiuk and Faisal Karoyo were the first goalscorers in Canada's new Prairies Premier League, which has completed a week's play.

Bonivital Flames 0-3 Lucania

The first of many Winnipeg derbies that this new league to offer opened up the new league. Bonivital Flames (established in 1979), of the St Boniface and St Vital neighborhoods in southeast Winnipeg hosted Lucania (established in 1971).

Flames had Maddie Priebe in goal, supported by Miguella LaNinga, Malaya Fernandes, Jolie Hanslip and Tara Boulanger in defense. Midfield was Jessica Chow, Mia Fonseca and a four-woman front line of Tyler Chernecki, Taleesa Minnaar, Lily Polet and Jessica Tsai.

Lucania countered with Cassidy Fedoruk in goal, Reese Peek, Hadley Anthony and Brianna Machado defending. Milan Tavares, Riley Sloane-Seale and Cassidy Vieira in midfield and Madison Mayert, Savana Caliguiri, Peyton Enns and Ava Batiuk up front.

The honor of the league's first goal went to the visitors' Batiuk, Winnipeg-born and bred, and currently playing NCAA D1 soccer for Missouri State. The first assist was from Mayert (University of Saskatchewan). Peek (University of Regina) made it 2-0 in the third minute of first-half stoppage, and Mayert capped the game in the 62nd minute. The photographer Duncan Hasker was on the scene and took a good gallery. Here is his photo of the first goalscorer:

Later in the day, it was the turn of the men.

Saskatechewan EXCEL 5-1 Forza Soccer Academy

Saskatechewan EXCEL lined up with Landon Bagonluri in goal; Zavier Thode, Bayo Balogun and Dominic Yaholnitsky in defense, Namvinh Nguyen, Valentino Silva, Bwidju Mutongolo and Duc Pham in midfield, Raj Rodney and Ifeoluwa Olusoji-Adeyeye up front.

Forza started with Cole Joslin in goal, backed by Lincons Tanyi, Thomas Diegel, Ante Kljusuric, and Denys Plitko at the back, Abdulhadi Al-Juboori, Mohamed Younis and Rashed Momani in midfield, Besufekad Tsedeke, Faisal Karoyo and Franco Zulli-Yue up front.

Forza made the first impression, Karoyo (Keyano College) becoming the first man to score in the Prairies Premier League, but the 28th-minute tally would be the high-water mark for the visitors. The equalizer came two minutes later through Olusoji-Adeyeye (Saskatechewan). His fellow Huskie, Rodney put the hosts ahead five minutes into the second half. Mount Royal's Mutongolo made it 3-1 in the 54th minute. Coen LaClare scored with 3 minutes left in regulation and Cavan Fernandes completed the rout in the 3rd minute of stoppage time.
