This Friday sees the return of the professional women's game in England with a substantially retooled London City Lionesses hosting Manchester United in the top division and Burnley visiting Watford in WSL2.
Play is already underway in the non-league divisions of FA WNL. Perfect after three games are Rugby Borough in the Northern Premier, Oxford United, Fulham and Bournemouth in the Southern Premier. In Division 1 North, Leeds and Fylde are perfect. Sporting Khalsa and Leafield Athletic are perfect in the D1 Midlands. London Bees have yet to drop a point in the D1 SE and the same can be said for Moneyfields, Bridgwater United and Wycombe Wanderers in the SW. Gwalia United are 2 for 2.
Understandably, many of the perfect sides are teams who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, or who were relegated from higher divisions, since it is often those clubs who still have playing staffs and infrastructure built for those higher levels.
Of the perfect sides, the Chair Girls of Wycombe are the most intriguing story. Still operated as part of the men's club's community development foundation, W3 as they are known only just got promotion from the regional leagues and yet they are competing at the top end of D1 South West. It also needs to be stated (again) that the geography makes no sense. Wycombe is 30 miles West of London.
