For the last four seasons, going back to the conclusion of the 2021-2022 campaign, the standings atop the Frauen-Bundesliga have been fairly consistent with Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg, and Eintracht Frankfurt finishing in the top three. The only real variation on the pattern occurred in 2021-2022 season when Wolfsburg finished ahead of Bayern on the table. Entering Match Week 22, all three teams sit in their familiar positions with five matches remaining.

Consistency in the standings doesn’t equal competitiveness though. Bayern have run away the league this year, going undefeated and drawing only once so far. Currently, they sit 11 points clear of second place Wolfsburg. The lack of competition at the top of the table doesn’t mean there is no potential for drama in the last few weeks of the season. Though Bayern and Wolfsburg are firmly locked into Champion’s League places, Frankfurt’s hold on the Frauen-Bundesliga’s third and final Champions League spot is not as secure. At the other end of the table, the relegation picture isn’t entirely clear as five points separate the bottom three teams. Two of the three will drop to 2 Frauen-Bundesliga at the end of the season.

The Champions League Battle

While Eintracht Frankfurt sits third with five weeks remaining, they are only four points ahead of fourth place TSG Hoffenheim. Head-to-head, the two teams split this season’s pair of matches. Frankfurt’s remaining schedule give Hoffenheim a realistic chance to leapfrog into that final Champion’s League spot. Frankfurt will face 1. FC Köln (8th), Wolfsburg (2nd), 1. FC Nürnberg (11th), Bayern Munich (1st), and finish with Union Berlin (9th). Arguably Hoffenheim’s remaining fixtures are less arduous. They will face Freiburg (7th), 1. FC Köln (8th), Bayern Munich (1st), Union Berlin (9th), and RB Leipzig (10th).

Though performances from earlier in the year are not necessarily indicative of future results, Hoffenheim performed better against their remaining opponents than Frankfurt. Hoffenheim went 3-0-2 against the teams they will face in the coming weeks. Frankfurt were not as successful against their future opponents, going 1-2-2 earlier in the season. The one win, however, was against Wolfsburg who sit immediately above them on the table.

The Struggle to Avoid Relegation

At the other end of the table, three teams face the possibility of relegation. Two of the teams will take the drop. Currently, 14th place Carl Zeiss Jena (10 points) and 13th place SGS Essen (12 points occupy the two relegation spots. Hamburger SV, sitting in 12th place with 15 points, could still face the drop as well. Among the three teams, Carl Zeiss Jena have the easiest schedule remaining, facing RB Leipzig (10th), SGS Essen (13th), Freiburg (7th), Werder Bremen (6th), and 1. FC Köln (8th). SGS Essen will face Werder Bremen (6th), Carl Zeiss Jena (14th), Bayer Leverkusen (5th), and Freiburg (7th). Hamburger SV will have the most difficult road to avoid relegation. They will face Bayer Leverkusen (5th), 1. FC Nürnberg (11th), Union Berlin (9th), 1. FC Köln (8th), and Bayern Munich (1st).

One Match to Watch and Why

Though they are midtable, 1. FC Köln will play a role in deciding who gets a spot in the Champions League and who goes to 2. Bundesliga. Remain on 1. FC Köln’s schedule for this year are Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, Essen, and Hamburger SV. If Köln can take points off of Frankfurt this weekend, it could significantly damage Frankfurt’s chances of clinching a Champions League spot, particularly with matchups against Bayern and Wolfsburg looming.
