Match Day 22 featured a full slate of matches that included an own goal, multiple red cards, and several spectacular goals. Lets take a look at the results and what it means for the races for Europe and to avoid relegation.

Friday, 27 March 2026

Carl Zeiss Jena 1 -1 RB Leipzig

Sitting at the bottom of the table and in need of points to have any hope of avoiding relegation, Carl Zeiss Jenna hosted RB Leipzig to open the weekend’s slate of games.  Lisa Baum put Leipzig  ahead 22 minutes into the match. Carl Zeiss Jena’s task became more difficult in the 63rd minute when Felicia Sträßer was sent off after picking up her second yellow in a four minute span. Despite being down a player for much of the second half Carl Zeiss Jena rescued a potentially valuable point when Isabella Jaron equalized the match in the 81st minute on a long freekick from not too far off the center circle.

Bayern Munich 2 – 0 1. FC Nürnberg

FCB Frauen extended their unbeaten streak in league play this season to 22 games as they cruised past Nürnberg 2-0. After a scoreless first half, Bayern went to work quickly at the start of the second half to settle any doubt about the match’s outcome. Edna Imade opened scoring in the 46th minute, scoring on a corner that pinged off a head, Nürnberg goalkeeper Lourdes Romero’s hands and the underside of the crossbar before settling for her. Natalia Padilla added a second goal in the 80th minute, sealing the match for FCB Frauen.

1. FC Köln 1 - 2 Eintracht Frankfurt

Köln’s Marina Hegering wasted no time putting the visitors on the back foot, scoring in the 2nd minute. Köln held the table’s third place team at bay until well into the second half when Laura Freigang found the back of net with a shot from the top of the 18 yard box.  Remina Chiba, recently returned from winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, scored five minutes later to give Frankfurt the win.

Werder Bremen 2 - 1 SGS Essen

After a scoreless first half, Mara Alber broke the deadlock 11 minutes after the break with a shot from a tight angle that beat Essen keeper Luisa Palmen after a deflection off of a defender. Lina Hausicke doubled Bremen’s lead in the in the 62nd minute. Lina Hausicke halved Bremen’s lead just three minutes later. That was as close as Essen got and the match finished 2-1.

Freiburg 1 - 2 Hoffenheim

Freiburg and Hoffenheim did all of their scoring in the match’s first quarter of an hour. Wiëlle Douma opened the scoring for Hoffenheim just six minutes into the match. Lisa Kolb added a second goal for the visitors four minutes later. Lisa Kolb put Freiburg on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. Despite both teams mustering a combined 15 shots on goal, neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remaining hour and fifteen minutes of play.

Wolfsburg 3 - 3 Union Berlin

Events at the AOK Stadion were as wild as the scoreline suggests. Hannah Eurlings put the visitors ahead in the 43rd minute. Janina Minge equalized the match for Wolfsburg with a volley from the top of the box that goalkeeper Nadine Böhi had no chance of stopping. Disaster struck for the She-Wolves in the second half when substitute Camilla Küver attempted a back pass to Wolfsburg keeper Stina Johannes that found the back of her won net rather than its intended target. Union Berlin extended their lead to two goals when Jenny Hipp scored an Olympico in the 79th minute. Küver found a measure of redemption scoring in the 84th minute to bring the She-Wolves within a goal. Three minutes later, Wolfsburg goalkeeper was shown a straight red for a hockey style shoulder check on Nele Bauereisen. Despite playing down a player and with a field player in goal, Judit Pujols managed to find the equalizer for Wolfsburg halfway through stoppage time.

Monday, 30 March 2026

Hamburger SV 1 - 3 Bayer Leverkusen

Less than 10 minutes into the start of the match, Leverkusen’s Vanessa Fudalla scored her 14th . goal of the season to give Leverkusen the lead. For much of the first half, Leverkusen had the better of the looks on goal but were unable to capitalize on them. Shortly before the break, Camilla Linberg equalized the match for Hamburg against the run of play. The second half started much like the first, with Katharina Piljic putting Leverkusen back into the lead. Unlike the first half, Hamburg wasn’t able to find another equalizer. Julia Mickenhagen added a third goal in the 78th minute to seal Leverkusen victory.

The Race for Europe

All five teams at the top of the table won over the weekend, keeping the title race unchanged. FCB Frauen remain in first with 61 points, 13 points ahead of second place Wolfsburg. Both Bayern and Wolfsburg had matches against Werder Bremen postponed in February have only played 21 games thus far. A victory by Bayern or a loss by Wolfsburg would secure FCB Frauen the meisterschale for the fourth straight season and seventh time overall.

In the race for the third and final Champions League bid, Frankfurt remain in third with 42 points, six back of Wolfsburg and four ahead of fourth place Hoffenheim. Bayer Leverkusen sit in fifth with 37 points, one back of Hoffenheim.

The Struggle to Avoid Relegation

Over the weekend the relegation picture got a little tighter. Carl Zeiss Jena’s draw against RB Leipzig enabled them to gain ground on Hamburg and Essen who both lost. With 11 points, Carl Zeiss Jena is one point back of Essen and four behind Hamburg in the final safe spot.

This Weekend’s Matchups

There are no league matches this weekend. Instead the DFB-Pokal Frauen, Germany’s main women’s football cup, kicks off its semi-final round. This year’s penultimate set of fixtures feature matchups between the two teams running away with the league and those in the relegation zone.

FC Carl Zeiss Jena vs VfL Wolfsburg – Sunday, 5 April 2026 – 9:15 AM CDT/4:15 PM CEST

FC Carl Zeiss Jena

FC Carl Zeiss Jena’s DFB-Pokal run to the semifinals is a bright spot for the club in an otherwise dreary 2025-2026 season. The three victories Carl Zeiss Jena earned in three cup ties is one more than the club has earned thus far through 22 league matches so far.

How They Got to the Semifinals

Carl Zeiss Jena opened DFB-Pokal play with a road trip to visit fourth tier Landesliga Sachsen side BSG Chemie Leipzig. Isabella Jaron, Anna Margraf, Nike Andersson, Elena Mühlemann, and Noemi Gentile each scored allowing Carl Zeiss Jena to depart Leipzig with a 5-0 victory. For the Round of 16, the squad traveled to the German capital to face fellow Bundesliga side Union Berlin. A Toma Ihlenburg first half stoppage time goal was the difference as the match finished 1-0. The club hosted 2. Bundesliga side SC Sand in the quarterfinals and emerged victorious 4-1 behind a hat trick from Olivia Alcaide and a goal from Melina Reuter.

Best Finish: Runners Up (2009-2010 Season)

Wolfsburg among the most successful Frauen-Bundesliga side, have won the meisterschale seven times and finishing runner up another seven times. The She-wolves success has translated into the DFB-Pokal. Wolfsburg has made the second most appearances in the cup finals with the most wins (11).

How They Got to the Semifinals

The She-wolves began their campaign for a 12th cup title with an 11-0 dismantling of Regionalliga Nord club ATS Buntentor. In the second round, goals from Lineth Beerensteyn, Eigentor Nia Szenk, and Cora Zicai powered Wolfsburg to a 3-1 win over fellow Frauen-Bundesliga side SC Freiburg. The She-wolves faced off against Eintracht Frankfurt and advanced to the semifinals behind a 35th minute Svenja Huth goal.

Best Finish: Champions (11 times - 2023-2024 most recent season)

Season Match Up

Wolfsburg and Carl Zeiss Jena have squared off twice this season. In Week 2, Wolfsburg won 3-1 at AOK Stadion behind goals from Janina Minge, Cora Zicai, and Lineth Beerensteyn. In the return fixture, just two weeks ago, Alexandra Popp and Cora Zicai scored to give the She-wolves a 2-0 away win.

Bayern are cruising in league play and looking to join Wolfsburg and FFC Frankfurt/Eintracht Frankfurt with a record tying seventh meisterschale. FCB Frauen are also looking to complete the domestic double for the second consecutive year.

How They Got to the Semifinals

Bayern launched their title defense with a 2-0 win against Third tier (Regionalliga West) side Borussia Dortmund behind a first half brace by Pernille Harder. FCB Frauen drew second tier FC Ingolstadt in the round of 16. Barbara Dunst, Lea Schüller, and Natalia Bidas each scored enroute to the 3-0. In their quarterfinal match, Edna Imade got FCB Frauen in drive with a goal six minutes into the match against Hamburg. Franziska Kett and Natalia Bidas added second half goals to cap off a second consecutive 3-0 win in cup play.

Best Finish:  Champions (2 times – 2024-2025 most recent season)

SGS Essen

The 2025-2026 season has been difficult for Essen. Through 22 matches, they have won twice. Their DFB-Pokal run is a positive point in an otherwise dour campaign.

How They Got to the Semifinals

Essen drew Regionalliga Süd side Kickers Offenbach in their first cup tie of the season. Six different players scored and Shari Van Belle bagged a brace as Essen advanced to the Round of 16 by a 7-0 score. For their second round match, Essen traveled to Potsdam to face 2 Bundesliga side Turbine Potsdam. Jacqueline Meißner scored just before the end of regulation to secure the 1-0 Essen win. Essen drew their first Frauen-Bundesliga side, Werder Bremen in the quarterfinals. An Ella Touon 44th minute goal proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Best Finish:   Runners Up (2 times – 2019-2020 most recent season)

Season Match Up

Bayern and Essen met for the first time in 2025-2026 in Munich in November. FCB Frauen came a way with a 4-1 victory in that matchup. In the second fixture Bayern walked out with a 5-0 victory.

One Match to Watch and Why

There are only two matches this upcoming weekend. Both matches will have one team heavily favored over their opponent. There is always a chance it could be Essen or Carl Zeiss Jena’s night and they could pull off an upset. It very well could not be. Either way, watch both because more soccer is better than no soccer and the league will go on break for the international window immediately after.

League matches will resume on 24 April as the season rushes toward its conclusion.
