Match Recap: Loons unbeaten streak comes to an end with home loss to Vancouver

Minnesota United’s eight match unbeaten run came to and on Sunday afternoon at the hands of Vancouver Whitecaps. After a scoreless first half, where the Loons allowed no shots from the ‘Caps, they gave up three goals by the 70th minute. A clean sheet loss at home was only avoided thanks to a Wil Trapp goal assisted by Tani Oluwaseyi. The loss is only the second one on the season for MNUFC, but extends the winless streak to three.
Coming in fresh with no new injuries the Loons made just a single change, seeing Carlos Harvey slot in for Jefferson Diaz at centre-back. On the flip side, after coming off two days rest having just played Inter Miami in the Concacaf Champions Cup the Whitcaps rotated eight players for their starting eleven.

Nothing much of note occurred during the first forty-five minutes of play, with the Loons holding the Whitecaps to zero shots. Eric Ramsey said post match, “I think this is maybe a strange thing to say, but we lost that game in the first half for not using the possession, the territory.” If there was a highlight during the opening half it was the Wonderwall booing Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.
It didn’t take long after the second half started for the deadlock to finally be broken. In the 55th minute Sebastian Berhalter scored on a goal that was Initially called offside, but ultimately was overturned by VAR giving the visitors the lead.

Down 3-0, the Loons did answer back in a surprising way to avoid being shut out at home. Tani Oluwaseyi headed a ball perfectly to a waiting Wil Trapp, who scored on the volley to put Minnesota on the board.

After 90 minutes and a much longer period of stoppage time than expected, due to Joseph Rosales allegedly using a slur towards Emmanuel Sabbi, the Whitecaps walked away with a victory. In regards to the incident Eric Ramsey and multiple players stated “The league has a way of dealing with these things,” and MNUFC as well as Vancouver Whitecaps released club statements. As more information comes out this week, we will provide updates.
The loss this afternoon puts MNUFC at a record of 4-2-4 (16 points) heading into match eleven of the campaign, where the Loons will travel to Texas for the first of two matches in May against Austin FC. ATX is currently holding the second place spot in the Western Conference with a 5-4-1 record to this point in the season. The two sides last faced each other last June in St. Paul where Austin FC defeated the Loons 1-0.
